I do not have any problem wiht Russians wanting to invest in Mongolia, but they should have same rules as for everyone. It's a hard game. Russia COULD give us an easy access to Europe, China COULD give us easy access to world oceans. Neither are doing that right now. How do we persuade them to do that? I think S. Bayar has the hardest job in MGL.

Re: Putin to visit Mongolia

Putin to Mongolia visiting to there be for giving and signing of Tavan Togoi massive coal project to Russian side, in company associated with Putin. I cannot believe that the MPRP is still there nearly 90 years after they introduced communism and its disastrous consequences to Mongolia. What happened to the Chinggis Khan Party? Did they close down?

Re: Putin to visit Mongolia

Yeah i know....I thought Bayar was a Russophile....then again it was chinese national TV...I'll try and find out more on what the chinese are saying regarding the sea-port deal.

Re: Putin to visit Mongolia

that's the strangest thing to say and I hope our PM did not say that. china does not bully its neighbours? how about tibet? us, mongolia? myanmar? east turkistan? i can think of millions of cases where china has been nothing but a bully and carried out shady political deals behind their neighbours' backs against them.

Re: Putin to visit Mongolia

a chinese friend of mine told me about a remark Bayar made whilst in china....about how china, unlike others, does not bully their neighbours-hinting at Russia may be- well thats what the chinese were saying according to him...

Re: Putin to visit Mongolia

The new deal with Chinese adds another dimension to the whole affair....in the 20s....China was a threat....Russia was our only hope....not so today...

Re: Putin to visit Mongolia

It's on the 24th of May.

Re: Putin to visit Mongolia

Do you by any chance know the exact date of the 2009 Mongolian Presidential Election?

Re: Putin to visit Mongolia

peaceful happiness or happy peace is now a slam dunk

Re: Putin to visit Mongolia

Having read their remarks a few thoughts:

1) I had no idea the Virgin Lands campaign was ever tried in Mongolia. It was an unmitigated disaster in the rest of Central Asia, so why talk about doing it again in Mongolia?

2) Everybody says they want to strengthen relations. The US has even said that about Iran and North Korea before. It's an empty phrase. What worries me more is the inter-party contacts between United Russia and the MPRP. That feels too much like an attempt to resurrect the Comintern to me. The Russians must know they ran Mongolia through party contacts in the 20s and 30s, so why not try again?

3) I think the tipping point will be if they ever start talking about "colored revolution," unspecified "extremist elements," or "domestic stability" inside of Mongolia. That, or if the international observers in this election report things like "inappropriate use of administrative resources," which is the big red flag in Russian elections.

4) As for Kalkh Gol, that totally deserves to be celebrated, and it's unfortunate that the timing is a bit screwy. I hope you take pictures of whatever celebrations they put together!

Re: Putin to visit Mongolia

I wonder what motives Mr. Happy (or Mr. Celebration?) has by sucking up to the big brazer. Just trying to strengthen our good relations, which, mind you, is really important...or could he possibly be a puppet? *gasp*

And I hate that we have to vote between Enkhbayar and Elbegdorj! Why couldn't other parties be represented? Of course everybody's gonna vote for Happy Peace, so the other guy might as well not run. But then again, the latter has his own little "army" and so does stand a small chance. Ugh, I just don't have confidence in either one of them and I don't want to have to choose between the two.
